Reebok was founded in 1970, and was originally called the African Antelope or Mercury. It continued to produce running spikes in England until the '70s, when Paul Fireman came across the company at the Chicago Sneaker Trade Show. Fireman bought the rights to distribute Reebok in North America for $1.5 million. This sale would later bring Reebok legendary status. Several sports brands have come and gone since Reebok's beginnings, but Reebok stayed strong.
In the 1990s, Reebok made a concerted push into the men's market with silhouettes like the Newport Classic, the Workout, and Revenge Plus. Later, the Revenge Plus evolved into the Club Classic 85. These were stylish yet versatile, making them perfect for wearing outside the gym. The Reebok X Vetements collaboration has also influenced the company's mainstream Delta logo. However, these collaborations haven't had as much impact as Reebok's white leather classics.
The 1980s saw the rise of fitness. Tennis and aerobics gained popularity. This new context suited Reebok well. The brand expanded its offerings from running spikes to athletic footwear for casual activities. In addition, Reebok began to target the female market with its Freestyle line. The company introduced a new pump technology to improve fit and comfort. The brand went on to reach a staggering $1.4 billion in sales annually. The 1980s brought Reebok even further and a new era for the brand.
In the past decade, Reebok has become the premier global designer, marketer, and distributor of sports apparel. Adidas bought the brand for $3.8 billion in 2006. However, Reebok has not been very profitable in the years following the acquisition. The company has therefore decided to focus on the emerging market of the CrossFit movement. The brand is a perfect example of an American sportswear company embracing a new era of global influence.
